Unlike
other works of art, sculptures are enjoyed in 3-D. Whether carved,
modeled or welded, they are studied and appreciated from multiple
angles. However, the singular nature of a sculpture demands that extra
attention be given to its design and placement within a home.
Here are some helpful hints to turn simple sculptures into conversation pieces.
1
Artwork, along with its placement, reveals a lot about its owner. For
example, a life-size Greek statue may look great posed under the palm
fronds near the front entrance. However, the same statue would be
overstated and awkward if it were looming over you in the bathroom.
2
Take into account the lines and shape of a sculpture. Consider
imitating the natural lines of the surrounding environment to create a
streamlined effect, so the eye is drawn effortlessly from one to the
other.
3
"When designing a new area, create a space, alcove or decorative shelf
specifically for the artwork," suggests Rick Cowan, of Studio Becker.
That way, you accentuate the artwork rather than cluttering countertops
with awkwardly placed art.
4
Bonnie Cooper, of Big Rock Manufacturing, suggests bringing the
outdoors in to create a more organic, natural framework or backdrop for
art. "For example," she says, "consider using a natural-looking stone
to create a rock wall that will highlight a sculpture."
5
Before buying a new sculpture, Cowan also suggests studying existing
environments to create a harmonious balance. Finding a glass sculpture
that matches the sink backsplash or a warm wood tone that complements
the hardwood flooring is a sure way to successfully incorporate a
sculpture into your home. |
