I
recently learned an interesting fact: Despite all the work we put into
our cover photos each month, it turns out that most of you read the
magazine from the back. According to market research, right handers
(the majority) hold a magazine by its spine with their right hand, bend
the magazine back and then thumb through it from the flipside. So, I'm
happy that my favorite page this month is also the last page. This
month's "Fresh Ideas" celebrates the Year of the Dog. Rightly so, as,
according to the Hawaiian Humane Society, 56 percent of Oahu's families
have pets—many of which are our canine companions. As a result,
Honolulu's specialty pet shops are growing in popularity. We went
shopping for you and hand-picked some of latest in pet-related home
accessories, such as Room Candy pet furniture, which can put a new wag
in your puppy's tail. But, my top-dog accessory was Snix, the
mild-mannered, mixed-terrier model from the Hawaiian Humane Society. If
you think being in puppy love is great, remember that the Society has
dozens of lovable, adoptable faces.
For
those of you who are looking for the best in home building and
remodeling, this issue includes the annual BIA Renaissance Building
& Remodeling Awards. To support the BIA's mission, and to
acknowledge better-built homes, Hawaii Home + Remodeling magazine presents its third annual Editor's Choice Award.
This
year's attention-getting entry is entitled "The Tree House." From the
outside in, this three-level Manoa home, nestled in big banyan trees,
has a cohesive look and feel. Its warmth and appeal charmed me into
thinking that it was a renovation. Only later did I realize that there
were no "before" photos. Go climb a tree here.
Enjoy the read!

"I
love these decorative enamel bowls with Mother of Pearl detail,
designed by artist Julia Knight. They come in bold, bright colors and
in a variety of shapes. Check them out at INTO, a Hotel Street shop
that carries home decorating items, plus jewelry and personal
accessories. There's such an eclectic mix of merchandise that it's an
adventure to explore."
