Aloha and welcome to my Hale Sweet Hale in Hawaii Home + Remodeling.

The Michael Jordan limelight overshadowed some terrific contributors to the “Three-Peat” Chicago Bulls. Backup guard and local product Randy Brown was neither tall nor especially quick—but when Randy was on the floor, good things happened. Was he a keen role player under that laid-back smile? Snapped teammates out of His Airness-induced sleepwalking?

Got me, but something clicked. I wanted the Randy Brown effect, more than I wanted to Be Like Mike.

The mindset served me well at my old gym, battling plenty of Jordan wannabes who refused to set picks or pass to the open man. It’s helped me overcome the new and unfamiliar in my professional career. And I’m winning the game of life, thanks to Randy. As I take on editor duties, I hope you, too, feel that good things are happening here.

Our “green” issue has a very special feature, sponsored by Hawaiian Electric Company. Hawaii stands to lose much from the consequences of global warming. Yet, new technologies are available to conserve resources and reduce pollution—without sacrificing creature comforts. Rebates from the government and utilities, such as HECO, for driving a hybrid car or installing solar water heaters, are easing the transition. Perhaps the strongest sign o’ the times is societal; living green is no longer an aberration, it’s fashionable.

We can help by guiding homeowners, by illustrating ways to renovate eco-friendly. Just scratching the surface, maybe. Is that legitimate? You bet.

It’s Cool to be Green

I have a small family. I wondered, how could we three possibly make a dent on the environment? Then I realized, if everyone thinks this way, we will continue to head down a destructive path. I also want to set an example for my boys. So, we began with small things at home: recycling bottles, composting. It’s amazing how once you start Ão/oo

What started as a personal endeavor is now a professional commitment. I am thrilled to present our first Green issue. We hope it will inspire you to reshape your relation to the environment. Collectively we will make a difference. Join us. It’s cool to be Green.

Shoot me an email (hhrfeedback@pacificbasin.net) and let me know what you think of this issue.
