Come On In

Article by Mark Berthold and Terry Rollman

Issue Date:  August 2007

As I wrap up our August issue, I see on my calendar that today is the midpoint of July. The September issue is set, of course, with the interviews and photo shoots scheduled, some already done. The October and November lineups have been debated and decided; only a few pukas remain. And just last week, the ball started rolling on December, our mammoth and invaluable 2008 Resource Guide.

That’s the publishing biz for you; life in the fast lane of concurrent and sometimes competing deadlines. What’s unusual is, I’m still receiving comments about April, our Green issue. As we hoped, those pages contained something on sustainability for everyone—I get kudos from architects, homeowners, even schoolchildren. People refer to it during business conversations. More than one person has admitted to hoarding multiple copies (which may explain why our secret stash of April issues is looking more and more like an endangered species).

I’d like to believe April’s staying power is due to our bang-up writing and design. But truthfully, it’s because environmental issues are taking root in the public consciousness. On a societal level, we’ve finally reached a tipping point. Green is hot, it’s trendy—and it won’t be unfashionable come the next Spring collection.

We can thank some very special Hawaii residents, on all the islands, for raising the banner of sustainability. In fact, that’s exactly what Hawaii Home + Remodeling will do Aug. 30 at Moanalua Gardens. You can read about this special event, “Who’s Keeping Hawaii Green,” and its honorees, on page 19. Or better yet, buy a ticket—a few are still available. Just shoot me an e-mail.

Correction: T. Oki Trading supplied the hot tub in June’s “Pool Party!” article, page 59.  The pool was by Duke DuPonte, of Distinct Landscapes. We regret the oversight.
