Maru Flooring

A Beautiful Home, from the Floor Up.

Issue Date:  August 2007

Everybody’s looking for a little “wow” factor these days. Floors may go unnoticed by most people, but a beautiful floor can stop you in your tracks. “It just hits you when you walk in the door,” says Wally Westlake, owner of Maru Flooring.

Walking into Maru’s two-room showroom, something else is evident: product selection. Everything’s out on the floor—literally. Laid down, patchwork-style, for customers’ viewing and walking pleasure is the company’s extensive selection of laminate flooring, in nearly 30 colors and styles.

So, instead of trying to visualize a whole room based on a single plank of pine, why not walk on 40 square feet of golden cherry? Or country oak? Or honey maple? The options seem deliciously endless. Among such popular lines as Dekora and Wood Flooring International, Maru Flooring also exclusively carries the most water-resistant laminate flooring available today: NovarLoc. Westlake proves its water-repelling power, too, by keeping a single plank of NovarLoc in an aquarium full of water.

With more than 100,000 square feet of floor space in the warehouse, Maru Flooring is increasing its inventory—by the container-full. Bamboo flooring, for example, is gaining popularity in the Islands as an ecofriendly, sustainable choice: strong yet elegant, and resistant to moisture-induced expansion and contraction.

Engineered hardwood flooring by BR 111, in gorgeous colors such as tiete chestnut and Brazilian cherry, is fast becoming the future of hardwood flooring, says floor manager (and Wally’s son) Brian Westlake. Engineered wood, made with slightly less wood than traditional hardwood flooring, saves trees and money, and can be installed on a variety of subfloorings, including concrete.

Beyond choosing among laminate, hardwood or tile, customers are wise to consider photosensitivity, dent-resistance, color, variation, finish and wear. At Maru Flooring, the staff work closely with customers to guide them toward the floor best suited for their tastes and homes. With more variety and factors in flooring than most people realize, the Westlakes make it their business to help the customer. Brian Westlake says, “We always get the compliment that we’re very knowledgeable, which is my favorite compliment, because knowing about the products helps our customers make an informed decision.”

Maru Flooring has the customer covered; its comprehensive, high-quality selection of flooring, underlayments and moldings ensures a flooring option for every room in the house. Visit the showroom, Wally says, and you’ll see all the different products available and make a flooring choice you can live (and “wow” your friends) with.
