School’s out!

Welcome to our summer fun June issue. Hawaii residents can step outside anytime; we enjoy a near-perfect climate the whole year long. But it’s summertime when we feel the most inspiration to remodel outdoors: extending the lanai, installing a custom pool, escaping to the garden—or simply painting the eaves. ’Nuff said!

Think a backyard pool is just a big tub of water? Think again. We preview the latest in pool and spa products on page 56. So, dive in and immerse yourself.

Decks and lanai get special treatment on page 42. Our award-winning freelance writer, Benton Sen, covers all the latest pest- and weather-resistant wood, stone, composite, tile and ecologically sensitive materials that go into a great lanai.

Taiko
Been a while since you downed a mai tai on Lanikai Beach? Our newest freelance writer, Michele M. Jackson, pours up a tasty liquid voyage of the latest Island drinkware, page 82.
Bringing the outdoors in—that’s the flipside to stepping outside. And Hawaii is truly the place to be for backyard entertaining. Our features on grills and outdoor furniture, on pages 38 and 26, will whet your appetite and invite you to lounge away on a lazy day.

A big mahalo! to Lyle Hamasaki (and Taiko, at right) of Lyle Hamasaki Construction Inc. for use of their Kahala property as the backdrop for our June cover photo, shot by Scott T. Kubo. Gotta go now; it’s time for a pool party!
