Something
was missing for Larry Lanning, of Hardware Hawaii. Sure, lumber and
hardware sales were booming. The store’s 52-year reputation for
customer service was rock solid. But Kailua had grown from its
small-town roots and the company, Lanning felt, didn’t match the
community’s wealth and independence.
So,
Hardware Hawaii has built itself a brand-new, almost 7,000-square-foot
showroom of mid-range to high-end items, a place where homeowners and
contractors can find “everything you need” to build a home.
“Everything
you see here, we sell,” Lanning says. “From the flooring and carpeting
to the bath and kitchen, drywall and lumber. All the lighting, windows,
cabinets, fixtures and appliances. Our mission is to provide a complete
selection of products to build, maintain, improve and enjoy your home.”
Longtime
customers might be surprised to find many high-end product lines not
seen before at Hardware Hawaii. For kitchens, there are Bosch,
Thermador, Gaggenau and three levels of GE appliances; along with
MidContinent, Showplace and Kamaaina cabinets.

Matching up sinks with flooring and cabinets is a breeze.

For
the bath, the TOTO, Porcher and American Standard fixtures are
complemented by some 40 brands of lighting. Hardware Hawaii also offers
gold-flake sinks “to add some elegance in the bath,” Lanning says.
Opal
Wood, an acrylic-infused wood, is an interesting option for
countertops: very tough, with a luminous, mother-of-pearl finish. Don’t
forget the wine bar, a complete Weather Shield window and door display,
Emtek decorative hardware, an entire garage, even a clever closet
organizer.
Despite
the sheer number of items, the showroom is airy and user-friendly. The
layout is well-planned and easy to navigate. Plus, having all the
elements together in one showroom offers a real advantage for
homeowners.

“Here,
you can compare items side by side. Pick out the bath and we can match
it up with the right cabinets,” Lanning says. “Or, if you want a
complete kitchen, we can design it, from the porcelain tile up to the
rail lighting.”
Yes,
Hardware Hawaii now offers in-house design. It also can recommend
several contractors for any project and guarantee that the job is done
right.
In
time, the new showroom may claim bragging rights from the lumber and
hardware divisions, but at Hardware Hawaii, the priority remains the
same.
“Customer
service is, above all, what we do best,” says Lanning. “After 52 years
of business, customers feel it when they walk in our doors.” |
