In its quarter-century of informing and inspiring Island readers, Hawaii Home + Remodeling magazine has cranked out each issue with a staff of merely one, and sometimes two, editors. That all changed this summer with the addition of two gifted wordsmiths. Let’s meet them.

Elaine Terry returned to Oahu five years ago after a long stretch on the Mainland. Her family has been in Hawaii since the mid-1800s, working the plantations and, she’s told, opening the first Chinese restaurant on Maui. She was in New York City during the Sept. 11 attacks and watched the towers collapse. “I love New York, but moving back to Hawaii felt right,” she says.

Jenny de Jesus recently graduated from UH Manoa, and Hawaii Home + Remodeling was an easy choice. A “voracious” magazine reader—“I inhale them and people can’t talk to me when there’s a fresh, new home magazine around”—Jenny decorates to de-stress.

You already know our Green advocate, Merideth Kimble, who has been at PacificBasin Communications for 1.5 years. At Ohio University, she studied magazine journalism and environmental studies, and interned with the Australian Conservation Foundation. “It’s all an adventure. Oh yeah, and GO BUCKEYES,” she says.

Special thanks to 39 Hotel for use of its modern-art showroom for the August 2007 lamps feature opening photo. We’d also like to thank David Croxford for his photography of the lamps throughout the rest of the feature.

Butterboy

Better Butter Storage

I love this thing! The Butter Boy was made for buttering corn, but I’ve found another use for it. As I’ve mentioned, I make a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches at my house (“the world’s best”) and the Butter Boy is great for applying butter to the pan, as well as storing butter between use … even my kids like to use it! I found this one at Ross downtown for $4.99.
