Soon to rise along Kalakaua Avenue, the Allure Waikiki is a planned 35-story condominium with plenty of selling points: Superb location. A plantation-style Grand Lanai, anchoring a comfortable stable of shops. Native plants and flowers, luxuriantly surrounding a Hawaiian fishpond. The sixth floor Recreation Terrace, with infinity pool and state-of-the-art fitness center.

But for those whose idea of a good time is an at-home epicurean experience, the real treat is inside. Every one-, two- and three-bedroom residence is equipped with an all-Viking kitchen.
“The Allure Waikiki features a gourmet kitchen—and Viking is our standard appliance package,” says Amy Phelps, of developer Fifield Building Icons. “Each kitchen has a stainless-steel Viking fridge, microwave, dishwasher, oven, cooktop and garbage disposal.”
Sounds traditional enough, until you consider just how full-size these appliances come. The free-standing 30-inch electric range, for example, is a powerful, efficient, four-burner ceramic cooktop. A large-capacity oven is directly underneath. The convection/microwave oven, merely a hand’s reach above the range, has all the browning capabilities that a demanding chef might need.

And all packaged in a compact design. The four cooking units are combined into basically two built-in appliances to free up cabinet and countertop space. “You’ve got 100 percent of your cooking components, in only 50 percent of the usual space,” says Al Lum, of Viking Range.
The deep sink and capacious Viking refrigerator/freezer round out the kitchen’s work triangle—itself remarkably efficient in arrangement.

“Standing in front of the range, without taking a single step, the chef can open the refrigerator or put something in the sink,” Lum says. Or, the kitchen can “comfortably fit two chefs—or one chef and his helper!” Phelps adds, demonstrating how one person can prep food at the sink or cook on the range, while another can walk to the fridge, open the door and dig in.

To give the feeling of openness and size in a condominium kitchen, Fifield wanted very clean lines and finishes, with everything streamlined and extremely accessible, Phelps says. Viking was an easy choice. The refrigerator is mounted flush to the cabinet, so it doesn’t protrude or stick out from the wall. Yet, the door can still open because the hinge is specially designed. “Viking is the only refrigerator line to offer this flush mount, for aesthetics,” Lum says.
In fact, the whole Viking aesthetic matches up well with contemporary tastes, Lum adds. “It’s a simplified look; not busy,” he says. “What makes Viking attractive to homeowners is, when you step into the kitchen, all the appliances have the same great stainless-steel finish. That continuous look is what Viking is all about. It’s the only high-end appliance that achieves a total look—we even make the garbage disposal to match. It’s a package that suits builders well.”

Phelps adds, “Kitchens have become more of a gathering place where people like to cook and talk, even more so than the living room or family area. I think for this small space, we achieved that—and the Viking kitchen really works for the Allure project.”
