Beginning a home furniture collection is just like building a good clothing wardrobe. Start by setting a budget. Then, invest in a few good, solid pieces. Accessorize with inexpensive or trendy items.
1. Invest in solidly built pieces. Be sure to choose a frame style that is timeless and can work with many different looks over the years. Good-quality upholstered pieces can be reupholstered several times before they have to be retired. Keep the lines clean and simple to allow more flexibility as trends change. Choose a neutral fabric so that accent pillows can add the drama. 2. A few good case pieces are also a great investment, such as a Curio cabinet or a wall unit. Collectors should spend money on a quality display cabinet that can be kept for years to come. On the other hand, pieces such as coffee tables and end tables don’t need to be expensive to make a statement. 3. Purchase a solid dining table and chairs, especially for a formal dining room. Select a style that is timeless. If trendy is the goal, spend top dollar for the table and get less expensive, trendier chairs to go with it. 4. Find pieces which can be inexpensive and fun, bringing color and personality into any room. These pieces can be changed out easily when the mood strikes. Look for pillows, artwork and lighting to fit current styles. 5. When putting a design package together, it is best to look more at the overall budget rather than the price of each item. Don’t be put off by one expensive item when it really makes the space complete. Try to look at the big picture, spend money on the important pieces and save on the rest. The bottom line is meeting the budget, however that may add up. |
