1. Paint color is the most inexpensive design detail. If you do nothing else but add color to an accent wall or change the color of the entire space, you will make a dramatic change in the design. Paint color can also pull together an entirely new room, adding warmth and excitement that white walls just don’t offer.
2. It’s OK to use several fabrics in one space. Just make sure you vary the scale of the prints or textures to create interest.
3. Have a small space with floor-to-ceiling windows? Painting the ceiling the lightest shade of blue (to match the color of the sky) can raise the height of the room visually and make the space feel much larger than it really is.
4. When buying new furnishings, try to find pieces that are multifunctional. Think about your needs, such as more storage, and find pieces that are not only beautiful, but also serve more than one purpose, such as storage ottomans, a coffee table with storage space or a TV armoire with extra storage.
5. When beginning any design project, it’s important to have an inspiration piece, a starting point for your design palette and style. Find something you love and build around it. It can be a comfortable sofa or an interesting vase—anything that speaks to you.
