For many of us, our homes are the only places in the world that are truly our own. They’ve been called castles, havens and places where our hearts live. Yes, we’ve heard all of those clichés. But here’s some support for their sentiments; it’s still a fast-paced world out there, and now, more than ever, our walls, windows and floors provide solace from a busy day and give us a chance to regroup before returning to the daily grind. That’s why good design and construction are so important. Those who design and build our houses have an important job—helping us realize our dreams and get to that place in life where we can truly say, “I can’t wait to get home.”
This issue is dedicated to those who provide us with comfortable, functional spaces worthy of living in. In our special bonus section, we unveil this year’s distinguished entrants and winners of the 2008 Building Industry Association of Hawaii Renaissance Awards. We’ve also picked a favorite entrant—a fantastic new home on Maui—for our 2008 Editor’s Choice Award. Start dreaming on page 16. Thinking of starting your own kitchen remodel? Turn to page 42 to read about some of the best designers in the business, located right here in Hawaii. If it’s outdoor solace you’re looking for, we have some great ideas for you on page 52. There, you can learn more about how container gardens can set the stage for a relaxing morning in your very own courtyard—and get you ready for the peace and tranquility that awaits just beyond your front door.
One final thing to note this month: As part of our commitment to going green, we’re proofreading online instead of on paper. Special thanks to our friends at Hagadone Printing for making this possible.
As always, thank you for welcoming us into your home.
Aloha,
Sabra
