Choose the Right Shape

Cgl-small
You already know that changing to compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) from traditional light bulbs saves about three-quarters the electricity while emitting the same light and lasting 10 times longer. But, do you know how to choose one?

• The most popular CFL available is the spiral bulb (above). It is best used in desk, floor, shade and swing-arm lamps, wall lights and sconces that allow for ample air flow.

• A-type bulbs work well for lights with exposed bulbs, such as ceiling-fan light fixtures.

• Globe-style bulbs work best in places where you might want an attractive display of bulbs, such as vanity mirrors.

• Reflectors should be used for recessed lighting. They also work in uplight can fixtures, track and accent lighting.
