Homeowner’s Request:An avid cook, the homeowner had many functional requests for this custom project, including a free-standing, professional-quality range, adequate ventilation, a place to store spices and cooking utensils, a restaurant-style goose-neck faucet, a large island with plenty of storage and a wall-mounted television. The homeowner also asked for minimal wall cabinets, a pull-out recycle and trash bin and no microwave. When it came to style, the homeowner wanted to blend classic plantation hallmarks with modern loft sensibilities, including various finishes and furnishings.Designer’s Challenge:Marrying the kitchen’s functionality with eclectic, yet elegant, design.
Designer’s Solution:Cowan and his team created a classic L-shaped kitchen with polished concrete floors throughout and a large island that opened to a spacious great room. The industrial-style stainless-steel island serves as one of two focal points (a great contrast, the rustic dining room table is the other). Besides being aesthetically interesting, the island also provides plenty of room for food preparation and custom-configured racks, cabinets and drawers, perfect for storing the homeowner’s large repertoire of cooking essentials. To address the need for even more space, Cowan made sure the sink was flanked by ample countertop surface area on each side. He also placed the sink under a long window for visual interest. A dishwasher, as well as lots of drawer space for even more storage, sits underneath the countertop on both sides. A large pantry cabinet sits next to the sink, perfect for storing nonperishable items. The entire storage area, while functional, has a hidden benefit: there is minimal need for wall cabinetry, so the kitchen retains a sleek and simple feel. When it comes to style, Cowan’s material and finish choices shine. Dark wenge cabinetry and German greenstone countertops provide an incredible contrast. A rustic dining table mixes and mingles with retro aluminum chairs. Polished concrete and a chocolate-brown accent wall provide even more visual interest. Modern pendant lighting crowns the space exquisitely. It all adds up to a surprising mix of culinary functionality and adventurous style. |

NKBA Competition WinnersCelebrating its 15th year, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) Hawaii Kitchen & Bath Design Competition highlights the finest in kitchen and bath projects over the past year. Sponsored by Hawaii Home + Remodeling magazine, in conjunction with the Aloha Chapter of the NKBA, this event honors Hawaii’s most talented kitchen and bath designers. As in past years, each entry was judged on technical merit, aesthetic value and design excellence. The technical merit judging was based on the NKBA’s rules of kitchen and bathroom design. Plus, points were awarded for how the designers used their creativity to solve problems, how the solutions followed design principles and how color palettes and materials created an overall presentation. The following designs are the 2008 winners … Congratulations! |
