The Re-Use Hawaii warehouse is open for business.

We’ve heard that one of the most powerful conservation tools is reuse. Now, there’s a place in Hawaii that’s helping the effort, offering reclaimed building materials for adventurous homeowners looking for that “just-right” piece.

“We created this space to be a channel for salvaged materials,” says Re-Use Hawaii co-owner Selina Tarantino, “a way to funnel everything back into the community.” That’s precisely the idea behind the nonprofit organization’s new retail warehouse space in Kakaako.

Recently, Re-Use Hawaii has put its mark on the local green scene for its deconstruction work. The group takes structures—like the Nuuanu residence featured in the Green Hawaii section, starting on page 19—carefully apart by hand, piece by piece, and resells what it can in order to keep as much salvageable material out of our landfills as possible.

From lumber and lighting to flooring, windows, doors and hardware, the Re-Use Hawaii warehouse and 12,000-square-foot lumber yard have just about everything homeowners could need for building or remodeling. So if you’re looking for something green in between the big-box stores and Craigslist, pay Re-Use Hawaii a visit. The inventory is always changing and everything is priced to move, with most things under $100.
