After 23 years with no updates, this kitchen was certainly beginning to show its age. When it came time to think about a remodel, the homeowner was ready; she knew exactly what she wanted. In addition to new, working appliances, she was also looking for a lighter, brighter feel with better flow to the adjacent dining and living areas. The homeowner found just the right people to give her the new-and-improved kitchen she wanted: the designers from Details International. Maintaining the same general configuration as the previous kitchen, the Details team got to work to vastly improve the kitchen’s efficiency and usability. For the self-proclaimed “vertically challenged” homeowner, accessibility was also an important factor. At the center of the kitchen, designer Nicole Puakea designed a custom-height island that was narrower and lower than the one before. The new island is home to the cooktop and contains plenty of storage below. Plus, with its revamped dimensions, the homeowner can now see into her stew pot without having to tip-toe or pull out a stool, and she can comfortably open the oven door without bumping into the island.
Puakea used MDF (medium-density fiberboard) for the island, making it 100 percent recyclable, and chose a creamy-white paint shade to complement the neutral cabinets. Feet on the bottom of the island give it a furniturelike appearance. To top it off, the homeowner and the designers chose a rosemary-color Caesar stone countertop to anchor the piece in the space. For the countertops around the rest of the kitchen, the team chose plum-speckled, white Andromeda granite to set off the cool, light tones used for the cabinetry and walls. Lots of specialized storage, including pull-outs, extra-deep drawers and a Magic Corner cabinet, ensure the homeowner has a place for everything. A counter-to-ceiling cabinet near the sink provides easy access for the homeowner’s everyday dishes. Stainless-steel appliances, a metallic pull-down appliance garage and frosted glass in some of the cabinet doors offer a reflective quality to the space and help achieve the sought-after sense of lightness. Says Puakea, “For a very streamlined kitchen, it still has a lot of warmth to it. The colors work together and flow.” When it came to furthering the flow, the team revamped two pass-throughs, considerably widening the one to the dining room to accommodate a new serving area for the homeowner who "always wanted a buffet for parties.” Built-in cabinetry on the dining-room side is perfect for housing serving items, wine and her husband’s cigar box. “My family is really impressed with the kitchen,” says the homeowner. “My friends who had us over for dinners during the renovation come over now and they love how pretty and functional it is.” Adds Puakea, “It will be a well-working kitchen for many years—and turkeys—to come.” |
