A clean cabinet is a long-lasting cabinet. Here are some suggestions to increase your cabinets’ durability and longevity.

Inside: Don’t neglect the hardware. Internal shelving and hinges need to be cleaned, at least four times a year, and oiled when necessary.

  • Clean wood pull-out shelves and drawers and check for spills. Standing liquid can make wood swell and cause joints to separate around the edges.
  • Wipe down metal pull-outs to avoid corrosion, especially if you live near the ocean. Salt spray gets everywhere—including inside your cabinets—and it’s highly corrosive.
  • If possible, avoid any kind of excess moisture and heat. Neither is good for any type of cabinetry.

Out: Clean cabinetry exteriors as needed, depending on the use of your kitchen, but at least four times a year.

  • For laminate cabinets, sponge clean with soapy water.
  • For veneer or solid wood cabinets, use a wood cleaner/polish with a soft cloth.
  • For high-gloss finishes, be sure to avoid using an abrasive cloth, which may scratch the finish. Opt for a microfiber cloth and water or a damp chamois instead. If that does not work, you can use a mild orange-based cleanser or a vinegar-and-water solution.
