The kitchen's new bi-level peninsula features a bar top that doubles as a buffet for entertaining. "It's great every Sunday when we have the grandparents over," says the homeowner.

For a Niu Valley couple with one young daughter and another on the way, their “typical galley-style kitchen” was far from functional. “We wanted more of everything,” the homeowner says. “More counter space, more storage space and a more functional layout.”

The family sought an open, updated space that would also interact with the other parts of the home. They hoped it would allow them to have family over and to watch the kids playing in the backyard pool. What’s more, they needed it quick—before the new baby was born.

After asking around, the homeowners chose designer Chuck Siebenthal, of Seven Valley’s Design/Build, to get the job done well and quickly. “Chuck and his crew communicated clearly and really listened, which is the most important thing,” the homeowner says. With the family’s extensive wish list and the baby’s due date fast approaching, Siebenthal got to work.
“The previous kitchen was crowded with one person in it,” Siebenthal says, “so we opened up the space by removing one of the galley walls.” They removed a structural post, which would have stood in the middle of the new kitchen, and constructed concealed beams. As a result, the kitchen’s footprint doubled, making room for plenty of new additions.

A new pass-through to the living areas allows the homeowners to keep an eye on the kids as they play in the backyard pool.

A new peninsula is now home to a dual-fuel range, stainless-steel hood and bar top that works great as a buffet for guests. The addition of a pass-through to the family and dining rooms lends an open feel to the space, while allowing the homeowners to see through to the backyard. Loads of extra storage space enabled Siebenthal to incorporate corner Lazy Susans, specialized cabinets, several roll-out drawers and a floor-to-ceiling pantry.

The couple, avid cooks, requested all stainless-steel appliances, including a commercial range. But thanks to clean, classic finishes, the kitchen—even with its industrial appliances—never feels cold. The homeowners chose warm cherry-wood cabinetry with a cinnamon stain for an inviting, contemporary look. Near-black granite countertops give the space clean lines and a timeless feel. Says Siebenthal, “This kitchen will still look good 30 years from now.”

So, did Seven Valleys finish before the new baby came?  “A week before the wife delivered, we were out!” Siebenthal says.

Now everyone can enjoy the kitchen as the family grows. “Our kitchen went from very dysfunctional to very functional,” the homeowner says. “We’re really pleased with the results.”
