Slate tiles, from Bella Pietra, work perfectly in the walk-in shower. To the right, the large mirror slides open to allow natural light into the space.

In his spare time, the self-proclaimed weekend warrior slowly implemented a modern, open floor plan with very little separation between different areas. From the condo’s bare bones, Selley first constructed a 36” pony wall, or partition, between the bedroom area and the rest of the home and installed hand-carved Indonesian screens with bamboo panels to be opened and closed like shutters. Selley also reconfigured closet space—using a wardrobe system for maximum storage and organization—and picked up a large armoire for added space. It didn’t take long for him to discover that using multifunctional furniture pieces is an essential part of condo living.

Selley had to get creative to bring natural light into the bathroom, which is located closer to the core of the condo. “I expanded the bathroom a foot larger than the original floor plan,” Selley says. “I lost a little storage, but it’s still functional.” Selley also placed a large, framed mirror on a sliding track that, when open, exposes one full side of the bathroom to plenty of light, especially in the morning. A new, slate walk-in shower with ceiling rain tiles quickly became one of his favorite parts of the home.
