Bowled Over

Countertop bowl basins, like the one shown in this light and airy bathroom by Archipelago Hawaii, Refined Island Designs (below), are an elegant option in the bathroom. Switching an old basin out for a new one is also an easy and affordable upgrade. These basins (at left), from Bali Boo, show the variety of materials available, from bamboo and natural stone (top two) to carved river rock (bottom).

You can't beat the comfort of a large soaking tub for creating the ultimate at-home spa experience. “It's a luxury item people are definitely still after,” says Marshall Hickox, of Homeworks Construction. “A separate tub and shower is high on the wish list, especially in the master bath.” Hickox suggests Kohler tubs, like the uber-luxurious, overflowing bath shown below.

Black is a beautiful contrast to neutral hues. Here, a black countertop looks crisp with two different sizes of glazed porcelain tile from Daltile.

Combine natural elements, textures and tones for an earthy feel. This freestanding sink (right), from Bali Boo, mixes wood and stone to create a substantial piece with a clean, uncomplicated look. The furniturelike nature of a freestanding piece—with abundant room underneath—also makes your space feel more expansive.

Black finishes are perfect for providing high contrast to subdued neutrals. TOTO’s Waza Noir sink and faucet (bottom-right), looks striking, yet classic, in rich black, while the Ryohan sink (bottom-left), inspired by rock gardens, has a distinctly tranquil feel.

TOTO’s Neorest series of innovative toilets offers ultra-sleek design and high efficiency with many technological features. Now, TOTO’s SanaGloss makes maintenance even easier. The special treatment, available on TOTO products, is a super-smooth glaze that prevents debris, mold and bacteria from sticking to porous, ceramic surfaces. Available from T. Oki Trading.

GOOD TO KNOW

Removing the shower curtain and installing a glass door is a simple change that visually opens up the bathroom, says Tiare Noelani Cowan, of Archipelago Hawaii, Refined Island Designs. Changing out a tub shower to a walk-in shower works, too, and it makes aging in place easier.
