If your dated bathroom functions well, a few simple décor changes are all you really need for an update. But, if your bathroom’s layout isn’t working, you may have a more extensive project ahead of you. A new space plan, new fixtures and new finishes require professional remodeling assistance—and a bit of an investment. Luckily, the bathroom is one area of the home where you will recoup your investment when you resell.

Where should you spend your money?

  • Plumbing: One of the most expensive parts of a bathroom remodel is moving the plumbing, and no one wants plumbing problems, so make sure it’s done right the first time.
  • Quality fixtures: Spend money on quality products. You don’t want to have to tear out your new shower because you used a cheap shower valve and it’s already leaking.
  • Lighting: Lighting is an important, and often overlooked, facet of bathroom design. Consider adding a light source that illuminates from the sides of your vanity mirror, such as wall sconces. If you’re short on space, install pendant lights on each side in front of the mirror.
