1. Pick a programmable thermostat.A programmable thermostat allows you to automatically adjust your A/C system according to your household’s weekly schedule and needs. Advanced models will even let you program several different settings during the day for the most efficient usage. Every degree higher you can set your thermostat will save you energy and money on your monthly bill.2. Insulate hot-water pipes.Every time you use hot water, your pipes heat up and transfer heat to the air and, consequently, your home. Reduce heat radiation by insulating your hot-water pipes anywhere you can see them with rubber or polyethylene foam tubes. They’re available from any hardware store and are easy to attach.
3. Put in a light-tube skylight.A light tube or sun tunnel illuminates dark areas of your home by utilizing natural light instead of electrical lighting. The reflective tube captures sunlight and bounces it down into your home. It provides the same amount of light you would get from a traditional bulb, but it’s au naturel — and a professional can install one in a day.4. Install a ceiling fan.Ceiling fans circulate air to keep you cool and can reduce your need for A/C — all while using very little energy. Choose an ENERGY STAR®-certified model and, if it includes a light, use LED light bulbs to get the most bang for your cooling buck.5. Replace or retrofit your can lights.Older can lights are often inefficient because they aren’t sealed or insulated, allowing hot air to rise above the ceiling. Choose newer, airtight models or buy a retrofit kit that screws into the existing fixture. A good kit will seal the rim and area behind the bulb. |
