When our editors sit down to interview a homeowner who is satisfied with his or her remodeling project, we always ask: “Why did you choose your contractor or designer?” The homeowners featured in our American Institute of Architects (AIA) Editor’s Choice award story knew they had picked a good match when they chose a trusted architect who was willing to take all the steps necessary to ensure a fantastic finished product. The couple featured in our Great Kitchen story this month, answered by saying their kitchen designer listened carefully to their plans and didn’t attempt to nickel-and-dime them each time they sat down for a consultation.

There are lots of high-quality, licensed service providers out there. In the end, homeowners must choose one company with which to work. In talking with countless homeowners through the years, I’ve discovered that much of the decision-making process boils down to relationships. Compatibility, trust and simply liking the person doing the job are important factors.

If you’re in the market for a designer or contractor, check licensing and credentials first. Then, interview as many as you’re comfortable with (we recommend at least three). Get a head start by checking out the Building Industry Association of Hawaii’s Remodel It Right, Remodel It Green expo. You’ll find companies who will be at the show, ready to meet with you. Then, head to the show Aug. 13 through 15. Who knows, you just might find “the one.”

Good photography is one of the most important tools our magazine uses to encourage you to improve your homes. How many times have you seen a photograph in these pages and thought, wow, I’d like to do that in my house?

Our editorial team goes to great lengths to ensure inspirational photography, scouting great homes, scheduling photo sessions when the light is right and arranging everything just so. Our goal is for you to want to be there and re-create our scenes in your own homes. While we hope our stories of successful renovations and information about materials and where to get them are useful, without good photography, our magazine could not do its job: compelling you to make your home the best it can be.

When I started with this magazine eight years ago, one of our most beloved photographers, Macario, was taking most of those compelling shots. Soon after I began, he had to cut back and wage a battle with cancer. Macario passed away at his home on the Big Island in June after a long, brave fight. We remember him fondly and wish his family peace.

Aloha,
