Behind closed DRAWERS: Pull-out shelving and drawers in nearly all cabinetry further maximize the extra storage by allowing easy access to otherwise hard-to-reach items.

Dr. Tim Whiteside has been practicing yoga for more than 20 years. He’s also an avid collector, entertainer and foodie. That’s a lot of “life” to fit into one tiny condo—but with expert design help, the space has become a place where he can enjoy all his passions.
Whiteside first fell in love with his place while renting another in the same building. “I looked at it on a beautiful, sunny day. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky,” he says. “You can see the ocean, the mountains … You’re up above everything that’s going on on the street. I just thought, ‘Wow.’”
Whiteside has had these nesting tables for years, but Jackson helped give them the refresher they needed. Artist Chris Reiner repainted the tables in auto-body paint custom-mixed by Jackson.

The biggest advantage this condo had going for it was the view. But it lacked updated fixtures, storage and personality. Popcorn ceilings and weak kitchen cabinetry contributed to its lackluster appearance. “I couldn’t even put shelves in the kitchen because the pressboard was falling apart,” Whiteside says. “I knew that I needed to do something.”
With the help of a designer and friend, Whiteside tackled the infrastructure and storage problems, starting off by smoothing out the popcorn ceilings throughout. Next, Robert Marcos Inc. installed matching, custom-stained cabinetry in the kitchen. And as most remodels go, once you start, it’s hard to stop. They carried the cabinetry throughout the home, providing Whiteside with more places to store his many collectibles.
Jackson reupholstered these years-old chairs in Maharam fabric to update their look.

The basic layout and storage updates were now in place, but the character was still lacking. “I needed the place to feel more homey,” Whiteside says. That’s when he ventured into Pacific Home and met Jamie Jackson. “Their focus on environmental consciousness in terms of design really resonated with my thinking,” he says. “I went into the studio and felt very comfortable … Jamie and I hit it off.”
Jackson, a self-described “people-person,” used marked characteristics of Whiteside’s personality to give him the home he desired. “He does yoga, he entertains, and it’s a very small space, so we had to make things that were lightweight and could be movable and multifunctional,” Jackson says.
Jackson and Reiner chose 3form®, a translucent, eco-friendly resin material, for the closet doors. The 3form® is carried throughout the rest of the home, complementing the blonde cabinetry and contributing to a cohesive feel.

She added a reflective porcelain tile in the main living area, which features a large set of windows facing the mountains. She also brought in a custom Emma Gardner wool/silk rug, which has a green color that helps to bring in the scenery beyond. “It has greens and golds in it, so it brings the green mountains that are outside into the floor,” Jackson says. “It’s like bringing nature in.”
The calming feel of the living room makes it the perfect place for Whiteside to relax. “I meditate first thing in the morning, and that’s where I like to sit,” he says. “It’s a very comfortable place, and it’s cool to open your eyes and see the morning sun coming up.”
Whiteside chose porcelain tile for flooring throughout the home because of its combination of strength, beauty and affordability.

Jackson also added lightweight furniture, which makes an ideal space for Whiteside to practice yoga. “The idea of keeping the place open really helps because you want to put your mat down and just stretch out. There’s plenty of room for that,” Whiteside says.
Hidden treasure: A pull-out cutting board and butcher block tuck neatly into the ledge between the multi-leveled counters.

Now, with ample storage, a modern, minimalist design and space for meditation and yoga, Whiteside has a home that reflects his personality along with the ocean and mountains beyond. “I feel like it’s my home. From the ceiling to the floor and everything in between, everything has been redone,” Whiteside says. “You really do want to just come in, sit down and look outside. All times of the day, it’s really beautiful here.”
