The heart of this home, the living room, best captures its unique mix of Indo and urban. Visually, the two styles join from top to bottom, with a Bali-inspired pitched roof and glossy concrete floors.

From the start, the homeowner knew she wanted to create a clean-lined home that blended two of her favorite styles: airy, high-roofed Balinese homes and industrial urban lofts.

Design/Build firm Homeworks Construction carried out the plans created by architect Richard Senelly, building the new house from the ground up and working with the homeowner to choose the right finishes to suit her taste and the home’s theme. “Bali meets industrial New York loft, really, are two conflicting themes,” says Marshall Hickox, Homeworks president and Chief Administrative Officer. “To tie them together is difficult, but obviously not impossible.” Together, the whole team, including the architect, Homeworks and the homeowner, collaborated to create an interpretation that, according to Hickox, ultimately works.

The home, which sits on a narrow lot near Sunset Beach, doesn’t have a large footprint. Working with moderate square footage, the homeowner knew, with a nod to Bali, that she wanted high ceilings. Similar to the shape of many traditional Indonesian longhouses, the rectangular home features a high, peaked roofline. Creating large spatial volume within low square footage, known as massing, is what makes the home look and feel much more spacious than it really is.

Inside, the team kept the look of the high ceilings rustic by staining the exposed beams and the wood between them a deep, dark brown. “Architecturally speaking, the design of the home is more Balinese,” Hickox says. “It’s the finish material we used that has that clean, solid look of a loft.”
