The existing trees, in Tyler's favorite colors, provide a lush backdrop for new plantings, including birds of paradise, purple agapanthus, irises and lilies.

The Tylers had an OK backyard before, but it didn’t exactly elicit the oohs and aahs they were after.

A newly added walking path throughout allows the homeowners to fully appreciate their revamped garden from all angles.

“They wanted pizzazz,” explains Gary Shinn, president of Hokuahi Lawns. John Tyler specifically requested a lush, tropical look with bright flowers that he could enjoy even from the inside of his home looking out. The Roosevelt High alum was also looking for some very specific colors — his school colors, red and gold.

The crew chose to keep several existing trees near their natural growing height, including multi-color plumeria and yellow and red ohai. Then they got to work revamping the modest-size yard with a variety of low-maintenance tropical plantings. Shinn chose dwarf mondo grass, which only grows to a height of about two inches and pink asystasia for ground cover to keep everything looking clean and neat — a Hokuahi trademark.

Masses of heliconia were contained and pushed back using a root barrier. Birds of paradise, purple agapanthus, irises and lilies were planted for beautiful blooms, and ginger and red ti leaves along the back wall for color.
