Getting sand on the sofa is the last thing this young Lanikai family wanted to worry about during the summer months. Their “little white house,” as their son affectionately calls their cottage, is a favorite destination for friends and family. It's not surprising, then, that these homeowners wanted to prepare their place for the ultimate in laid-back summer living. With only 850 square feet of interior living space to work with, it was important to the family to maximize the open feel of the home and keep the finishes as low-maintenance as possible.
The cottage's good bones provide the perfect backdrop for the family's beachy lifestyle. Vaulted ceilings and exposed rafters create spatial volume and an airy feel. All-white walls and ceilings in every room add to the spacious look, and keep it consistent, while complementing the original hardwood floors. Large sliding doors and windows invite the outdoors in from every part of the house, mauka to makai. For just-the-right fuss-free furnishings and accessories to complement the home's solid structure indoors and out, the homeowners looked to fellow Kailua resident Jenn Johnson of Pacific Home. “Comfort is No. 1 in this house,” Johnson says. “They needed a relaxing space, visually and physically, to enjoy.” With the theme “simple summer,” Johnson incorporated some of the best items from Pacific Home for easy living, room by room.
