Things to Remember

The Balinese lantern above shows that garden décor can provide mood lighting in the evening as well as an artistic element during the day. Scot Willson of Tropical Modern used low-voltage lighting to create the soft effect here.

Look at your lighting in the dark. “No one can sell a lighting system during the day,” Mulkern says. “I'll select appropriate fixtures to set up in the evening and visit the customer after dark.”
Consider where your light travels. The same lights you use to highlight your palm tree may be casting glare inside your windows.

Keep the fixtures visible. Although they will be easy to see when they're illuminated, during the day, a fixture that blends into the ground could pose a walking hazard.

This fixture, and the one at right, is handcrafted, copper lighting made to withstand the harsh elements of oceanfront climates. "They will develop a lovely patina, which will simply age and change with time," says Carole Jacobs of Red Bamboo.
