Yes, it’s true: You can have too much of a good thing. For one beachfront home in Kailua, an overabundance of foliage created a tangled jungle littered with fallen leaves, fruit and more. “There were silver buttonwood trees everywhere,” recalls landscaper Greg Lee, standing in the home’s expansive backyard, stretching his arms outward. “There were about 65 of them, fully grown, each about 10 to 12 feet tall.” Silver buttonwood trees are known for thriving in salt air and high-wind conditions. Unfortunately, asserts Lee, they are also among Hawaii’s largest rubbish producers. “Just one [silver buttonwood] tree produces tons of garbage,” he explains. “Now multiply that by 65. Even worse, birds like to eat the flowers from these trees, so it was like having a bird feeder along the entire length of the yard. Rubbish was in the swimming pool, and bird droppings were everywhere.” Page 1 of 2 1 | 2 | Next >> |
