When the current homeowner of this rebuilt Kaneohe home saw her soon-to-be husband’s house for the first time, she was a little taken aback. The old, single-wall construction home was so termite-damaged that “there were actually big, gaping holes in the walls,” she says. Her fiance, only the second owner of the home, had lived in the house for 20 years. After the couple married, the homeowner says, “the idea of starting over with a new home was very appealing.”

Located on a quiet street near the Hoomaluhia Gardens in Kaneohe, the old home had incredible views of the Koolau mountains that neither of the homeowners wanted to give up. Instead of moving, they decided to build their forever home in the same spot, customized to suit their every need. Finding someone to help carry out their dream within their budget proved a little more difficult.

The previous home's layout, with the garage on the mauka side, neglected to take advantage of the beautiful views.

“A lot of people told us, ‘You’ll never get a decent house for that price,’” the homeowner says. But the team at Wasco Builders was different. “Rather than just saying, ‘No, that’s impossible,’ they were willing to say ‘You’ll have to shave this off, or do this this way,’” she says. “They were willing to work with us.”

“Communication is key,” says Craig Yamagishi of Wasco Builders. “There was realistic feedback from the beginning about what we could do to accomplish their goals. It can be challenging, but achieving a dream house within a budget can be realized.”
