This open kitchen has plenty of space for meals and social gatherings. A large, bi-level island provides storage and enough bar space for the whole family.

They wanted more space with more functionality and more efficiency. The only problem? They couldn’t find the right people for the job.

“We looked for almost a year,” Tracy says. “We needed one company who could handle everything from beginning to end, from the early stages of design to completion.”

When they met the team at Homeworks Construction at a BIA-Hawaii home show, they knew they had found the right company for the job. Homeworks, a complete design/build firm, offered everything they needed under one roof, streamlining the process and easing any stress that  might come along with it.

The neutral earthtones, which are favorites of the homeowners, used in the backsplash, countertop and floor pop against dark cabinetry.

The Lawsons’ original kitchen was so small and cramped, with impractical and inefficient use of space, that they ultimately decided to add on to the house to create a new, more spacious kitchen. Unlike remodeling an existing space, additions come with their own set of challenges for which the Homeworks team was more than ready.

“Additions are always a challenge because we’re tying into the existing structure,” says Homeworks project manager David Marti. “Structurally, we have to make sure we support the house as we open walls up and remove bearing walls. We’re taking out sections of the roof and adding on. It’s a challenge to make it seamless — but that’s why it’s fun.”

Once the new structure was up, Homeworks designer Sean Bradshaw created an open-concept plan with a long L-shape and a large, bi-level island in the center, both with Silestone countertops. The island offers the Lawsons an abundance of work and storage space, as well as bar-height counter space for eat-in dining — perfect for a family that also likes to entertain. Dark-stained cabinetry, with added features such as frosted-glass inserts and a built-in wine rack, lines the perimeter of the space in contrast to the neutral walls and floors. A fun mosaic tile backsplash ties all the colors of the kitchen together. Stainless-steel appliances and a unique, conical vent hood add extra shine. Three well-placed pendant lights over the island are the final touch to the clean, modern space.

“I just love everything about it,” Tracy says. “I love the island, the countertops, the backsplash. All of it. It’s exactly what we were looking for.”
