The dining room joins with the living room, kitchen and lanai to function as one flowing space open to the outdoors.

When it came time for a Honolulu couple to start their family, they looked to their past to help build their future.

They acquired the hillside home built by the wife’s grandparents, where her father grew up and she spent time as a child, with plans to raise their own family. “With all that history, everything really came full circle,” the husband says.

They originally considered remodeling the home, but ultimately concluded that building new made more sense financially and would give them a home that would hold up better over time.

The homeowners considered the long-term from the start. They wanted a home in which they could raise their family and pass on to their kids one day. They needed a comfortable, functional, durable and stylish space open enough for entertaining friends and their large extended family, with different living spaces for adults and kids.
