When the owners of this beachfront home in Hawaii Kai first purchased the property, they knew massive changes were necessary to bring it up-to-date — including the swimming pool and landscape.

“The whole house was straight out of the ’70s, and the pool was no different,” says Steve DeBiasi of DeBiasi Pacific. “It was rectangular with a built-in chaise lounge. It was the ultimate bachelor pad.”

To bring the pool into the future and more in line with the new, modern home being built, the homeowners turned to DeBiasi, who, after careful consideration, came up with the perfect solution.

“We wanted to extend the shoreline into their yard,” DeBiasi says. “They’re lucky enough to live in a beautiful place. Why not just tap into that?”

DeBiasi and his team created a lagoon-type setting with a crystal-clear pool, sand-colored bottom and decorative rock. An elevated spa at the end of the pool is the perfect place for enjoying an evening cocktail while watching the sailboats against the setting sun. Around the lagoon are pockets of carefully selected plantings including akia, naupaka and spider lilies.
