Do you want to be in Hawaii Home + Remodeling? I’m looking for YOUR ideas for January’s Green Living page. The theme is “New Year, New Uses for Old Things.”

 

So, what are your favorite new uses for things you already have in your home? I love to reuse glass containers. Once I’m finished with a jam jar, for example, I reuse it over and over—as a flower vase, to hold snacks or even to keep all my loose change in one place. My editor Sabra reuses small shopping bags to take her lunch to work every day. Pretty simple, huh?

When I forget my reusable shopping bags and am stuck with the plastic ones, I reuse them as laundry bags for cleaning rags. I keep my dirty cleaning rags inside plastic bags until I accumulate a load large enough to wash the rags separately from my clothing.

I'm submitting this for Ed and Kaypee - they use recycled Classico jars for hurricanes...with a little sand in the bottom and a tealight, they're perfect for a table setting!

I do a couple of things: Use biodegradable laundry soap and then save the rinse water from the laundry to water plants in the yard - it uses the water twice and saves on the water bill. Keep the cardboard egg cartons (if no eggs broke) and use them to pack boxes instead of the Styrofoam corn or bubble wrap. Keep a set of dishes and eating utensils at work so, even at potluck lunches, I don't use throw away dishes.

In renovating our 1950s home, we kept some of the old furniture to be repurposed into new things. Our kitchen counters and cabinets have been turned into storage space for our tool shed and we've reupholstered some chairs and stools for an updated look. We kept the frames of some of our older furnture to hopefully use as bases for ottomans or other things. We've also kept the old doors in hopes of turning them into giant chalkboards for our spare room.
