How quick are you to turn on a light in your house as soon as it starts getting dark in the evenings? Sure, it’s a modern reflex, but it hasn’t always been this way. Back in the day, the impending darkness meant it was time to wind down and get ready for bed. In a book that I’m reading called The Healing Night, the author suggests that excessive light at night (LAN) deeply affects our health and the health of the planet—which, as we know, is one in the same. So, whenever I can, I try to be conscious of how much artificial light I need and use. Lessening LAN helps us sleep better and saves on electricity. Sounds like a win-win.
