Hawaii Energy, the new company in charge of consumer rebates for energy efficiency in Hawaii, has it all spelled out on their Web site. If you use a Hawaii Energy approved solar contractor to install the  water heater, you can save big bucks. Here's an average breakdown, as shown on hawaiienergy.com:

Average cost of solar hot water heating system: $6,620
Instant rebate from approved solar contractor: $750
Federal tax credit: $1,761
State tax credit: $2,055

Net cost to customer: $2,055
