Who knew garbage could be so gorgeous?

This month, Coca-Cola debuted its creative collaboration with furniture manufacturer Emeco: The 111 Navy Chair. It is made from at least 111 plastic Coke bottles and modeled after the original aluminum Emeco Navy Chair (above left).

"The 111 Navy Chair is a reflection of our commitment to sustainability, constant innovation and originality in design," said Kate Dwyer, Group Director, Worldwide Licensing, The Coca-Cola Company, in a press release. "This latest addition to our line of rPET [recycled polyethylene terephthalate plastic] licensed merchandise underscores the fact that Coca-Cola bottles are valuable recyclables. It is another step in our vision to recover and reuse all of our bottles and cans."

The production of this chair is expected to keep three million plastic Coke bottles out of landfills each year. Now that's what I call upcycling! The chair is available (in red and several other colors) locally at Design Within Reach.
