Thoughts of Home

First, I did some online research to find out what would grow best in pots. Then, I headed out to Koolau Farmers to pick up a few plants. I picked (clockwise from top left) tomato, cucumber, parsley and basil. I inherited the plant on the far left from my friend, and master backyard gardener Sarah. Then, I headed to Geobunga's new location across from Target in Salt Lake. There, I picked up four brightly-colored pots at really reasonable prices. Then, it was on to Hardware Hawaii for the right soil and drainage materials, including Down Unders (the stands shown underneath the pots ... they help keep excess water from spilling out onto the ground). I also picked up an extra clay pot, which I spray-painted white (far left). It's been two weeks since this picture was taken, and my garden is thriving! I'm already using the herbs for cooking and can't wait to taste my first veggie. I'll follow up with more pictures in a couple of weeks.

P.S.: I was so inspired by this garden, I plan to write a story about how to grow your own for our September Outdoor Living piece. I'll include advice on choosing the right pot, the right plant, and the right "recipe" for layering soil and drainage materials. Stay tuned for that, and for more pics.containergarden For more stories like this: Home, Outdoor Living
