Technical Merit Award

Homeowners’ Request: The homeowner wished to have a more open and inviting atmosphere between the kitchen, dining and living room areas.

Designer’s Challenge: A solid wall separated the kitchen from the rest of the home.

Designer’s Solution: This solid wall was cut, so that it now stands approximately 2.5 feet high. This simple move opened up the space, while creating a foundation for a new bar. Three pendant lights accent the informal eating area, and five 24-inch pub stools provide casual seating.
Throughout the kitchen, recessed lighting provides general illumination, reinforced by undercabinet halogen lights for task areas. Cool stainless-steel appliances match the cabinets’ stainless-steel pulls, and spring-green glass tiles cover the back wall, as well as add a splash of color. Tying it all together are dark green Silestone countertops and a stylish, black, 36-inch gas cooktop.
